People Tracking

Create people, organize groups, attach people to moments and entries, and connect tracked people with Immich faces.

Journiv can track the people who appear in your life and connect them to the memories you write down. People are private to each Journiv user, can be organized into groups, and can be attached to both quick moments and full journal entries.

If your account is connected to Immich, Journiv can also help you create or link people from Immich face recognition data. See the Immich Integration guide for the full setup and usage flow.

Core Model

People tracking is built around three pieces:

  • People: individual profiles with a name, optional nickname, note, profile image, usage count, and last-seen metadata.
  • Groups: custom collections such as family, friends, coworkers, school, or travel. A person can belong to more than one group.
  • Moment links: the connection between a person and a timeline moment. Full entries inherit this context because entries are attached to moments.

This means the same people model works for quick logs, long-form entries, timeline cards, entry details, and search/filter workflows.

Managing People

Open People from the app navigation to manage your people library.

You can:

  • Create a group before adding people, or keep people ungrouped.
  • Add a person with a name, nickname, note, and group membership.
  • Upload or remove a profile image.
  • Edit a person's details later.
  • Archive a person when you no longer want them shown in active pickers.
  • Restore archived people if you need them again.
  • Merge duplicate people so existing memory links move to the person you keep.
  • Reorder groups to match how you think about your relationships.

Deleting a group does not delete people. People from that group remain available and become ungrouped unless they belong to another group.

Adding People to Entries and Moments

When creating or editing a journal entry, use the people control in the entry form to select who was involved. The same people selector is available from quick moment logging.

The selector supports:

  • Searching existing people by name.
  • Selecting multiple people at once.
  • Creating a new person from the picker when the search does not match anyone.
  • Showing selected people as removable chips before saving.

After saving, the people are stored on the underlying moment. They appear in entry and moment detail views and can be used in timeline filters.

Timeline Filtering

People filters help you find memories involving specific people.

You can filter by one or more people. Journiv supports matching entries or moments that include any selected person, and the backend also supports all-person matching for workflows that need every selected person to be present.

Common uses:

  • Review everything involving one person.
  • Find family moments across all journals.
  • Search for entries where a specific group of people were together.
  • Combine people with date, journal, tag, mood, or media filters.

Immich Support

People tracking works on its own, but it can also connect with Journiv's Immich integration. When Immich is connected, you can import or link selected Immich people and use those links for face-based people suggestions while attaching Immich photos.

Detailed Immich setup, permissions, import steps, linking behavior, and troubleshooting live in the Immich Integration guide.

Import and Export

Journiv exports include:

  • People profiles.
  • Profile images when media is included in the export.
  • People groups and group membership.
  • Archived status.
  • Moment-person links.
  • People references on exported moments.

When importing a Journiv backup, Journiv recreates people, restores group membership and profile images from the backup, and relinks imported moments to the matching people. Existing people and groups are reused by normalized name where possible to avoid duplicates.

Privacy Notes

People tracking is local to your Journiv instance.

  • Journiv people are stored in your Journiv database.
  • Profile images are stored by your Journiv backend.
  • Immich people support is optional and only applies after you connect Immich for the current user.

Troubleshooting

I created duplicate people

Use Merge Person from the People screen. Journiv moves memory links from the duplicate into the person you keep.
